Online Experience
What is the Online Experience at CMU like?
At Carnegie Mellon University, our mission is to create a transformative educational experience for students, and this commitment lives throughout our approach to online learning. Our learning science engineers collaborate with faculty to combine evidence-based teaching practices with cutting-edge content. Every course in our online graduate certificate programs is intentionally designed with interactivity at the core and carefully curated materials to foster rich, rigorous learning experiences. This intentional approach allows you to focus on mastering new knowledge and skills that will elevate your career from day one.
So, how does it all work? Glad you asked!
Our online courses blend weekly live class sessions with flexible on-demand learning activities that you complete on your own schedule. Each week, you'll join live online classes led by CMU’s renowned faculty, then work through carefully curated assignments designed to accelerate learning and ensure efficient mastery of the material. This unique mix means you get to hear directly from experts and immediately put concepts into practice through real-world applications.
Live Weekly Online Classes
In our live sessions you’ll actively engage with peers and professors in solving problems and discussing ideas. We design live classes as interactive, active learning experiences rather than one-way lectures. You'll be filled with opportunities to actively apply new knowledge, ask questions, and make sure you’re ready to take what you’ve learned back to work. You might participate in collaborative problem-solving, group discussions on complex concepts, or brainstorming activities to tackle real-world challenges together.
To accommodate busy professionals, live classes are held in the late afternoon or evening (ET) after standard work hours. Depending on the program, courses may run in an accelerated 6-week mini-semesterformat or a traditional 14-week semester timeline. In every case, class sessions typically meet once per week (occasionally twice if a recitation or extra support session is offered) for about 60 to 90 minutes each. All live class meetings are conducted via Zoom, so you can join from anywhere without a commute.
Learning and Flexibility
Complementing the live classes are a variety of learning activities that you can tackle at the times that work best for you. These weekly activities are hand-picked by your CMU professors to reinforce and expand on the live sessions. They may include:
- Reading assignments — articles, case studies or research papers to ground you in key concepts
- Pre-recorded video lectures or demonstrations from faculty that you can watch on-demand
- Interactive exercises and quizzes to practice new skills and check your understanding
- Collaborative discussions or projects with classmates via online forums or group tools
Most importantly, every activity is designed for busy working professionals. Have time in the morning? Read an article or complete a short assignment over your coffee. Got a break at lunch? Watch a 15-minute faculty video while you eat. Busy in the evenings? You might join a study group at 8 p.m. after the kids are in bed, or fit in a practice quiz whenever you have a few minutes to spare. This level of flexibility allows you to integrate learning into your life, instead of having to rearrange your life around learning.
At Carnegie Mellon, you'll find many ways to engage with course material in manageable, bite-sized chunks that fit your schedule. Our faculty provide timely feedback on your work and encourage iteration, so you can refine your understanding before major assignments, exams, or real-world application. With robust support from instructors, peers, and student services, we empower you to take control of your education. This ensures you achieve true mastery of each concept and can immediately apply what you learn every day in your job.
